The french have always had a loose approach to the spelling of the word loser.

Is this a reference to falling birthrates?

Actually, I’m not sure… I don’t think so.
Sure there was a decline in birthrate right after the babyboom of the 50s, but in other news, I’ve recently read that France had a surprisingly high rate for the past couple years.
I think this had more to do with social and economic issues. Basically, the fact that people born in the 60’s and 70’s are increasingly paying for social security and retirement of an increasingly large number of people. And the social tensions that ensue.

As Google will tell you, “Loose” is really a popular word with Frenchmen (no, nothing to do with women).
