Step 1

Hello, my name is Dave and I have a problem

Actually, I am typing this post on my fucking problem.

I don’t know if I’ll be able to stand the pain much longer.

Hear me, I am with Operating Sytems the way I am with religions: all about freedom of choice and respect of differences.

But this thing, this OS, it just sucks so much… How is that humanly possible?

What with the graphic interface that looks like it’s been designed by a 6 year old on an 8 bit graphic software. Destktop windows that go out of their way to display everything but their actual content (yes, there is such a thing as too much meta-data). Endless nagging messages for stuff that works, and not a single warning or explanation for stuff that doesn’t. An interface that feels like it has overdosed on rohypnol…

The highlight of my day was when I found the option to remove that godawful XP theme. One more bubbly blue window and I was ready to kidnap their design team and have them gang-raped to death by a whole village of smurfs on crack.

Oh, did I mention it’s all in Japanese? Yea, keeps things interesting, makes sure I realize exactly how many pointless alert boxes and meaningless messages Windows pours into the screen every time I try to change the slightest option. When it takes you an hour to read them, believe me you notice it.

Now, believe it or not, despite my overall contempt for most products ever made by Microsoft, I used to keep some lingering affection for my time spent using NT at work a few years ago. Hell, I was even developing on it (don’t ask) and it was perfectly bearable, especially in light of the competition at the time (to my left, War of the X-Window servers, to my right, MacOS 8.6, ’nuff said).

But obviously, NT 4’s very limited (and only remotely successful) attempt at sober efficiency was merely a temporary oversight, ’cause let me tell you they’ve caught up on the crappiness with XP.

Please give me my Mac back.

  1. I feel your pain. When the harddrive my Linux install was on died a couple of months back, I went into depression. But I would never buy a Mac and join that communist regime.

  2. Windows is another name for endless pains. A product which definitely forces you to spend so much time behind computers that its utility becomes doubtful.
The blue in XP reminds me always of Blue Secreen of Death!

Lets hope for a MS Window less 2005!
