{"id":6461,"date":"2013-04-09T15:11:54","date_gmt":"2013-04-09T06:11:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unknowngenius.com\/blog\/?p=6461"},"modified":"2015-08-05T11:55:00","modified_gmt":"2015-08-05T02:55:00","slug":"good-bye-maggie-and-thanks-for-nothing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unknowngenius.com\/blog\/archives\/2013\/04\/09\/good-bye-maggie-and-thanks-for-nothing\/","title":{"rendered":"Good Bye Maggie, and Thanks for Nothing."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>And so it has come to pass, yet another <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Margaret_Thatcher\">towering political figure<\/a> of the not-so-distant past is gone, her questionable legacy shielded from scrutiny by the buffer of a couple decades spent decaying into pitiful senility.<\/p>\n<p>I hear it is bad form to speak ill of the dead (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/commentisfree\/2013\/apr\/08\/margaret-thatcher-death-etiquette\">some disagree<\/a>), so I will just let her give us some highlights in her own words:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On <strong>Nelson Mandela<\/strong>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/unknowngenius.com\/blog\/archives\/2006\/06\/16\/thirty-years-ago-way-down-south\/\">liberation movement<\/a>: a \u201ctypical terrorist organization\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/world\/thatcher-was-wrong-on-apartheid-mandela\/article10926500\/\">in 1987<\/a>).\n<\/li>\n<li>On <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chile_under_Pinochet#Human_rights_violations\"><strong>Augusto Pinochet<\/strong><\/a>, her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.santiagotimes.cl\/world\/chile-abroad\/25980-margaret-thatcher-staunch-pinochet-supporter-and-friend-dies\">indefectible friend<\/a>: \u201cit is you who brought democracy to Chile\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/304516.stm\">in 1999<\/a>, yes <em>ninety<\/em>-fucking-nine).\n<\/li>\n<li>On <strong>the gays<\/strong>: \u201c[a local authority] shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality\u201d or \u201cpromote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Section_28\">Section 28 of the Local Government Act 1988<\/a>).\n<\/li>\n<li>On <strong>the immigrants<\/strong>: not keen on them at all (\u201cIf you want good race relations, you have got to allay peoples&#8217; fears on numbers\u201d), but &#8220;less objection to refugees such as Rhodesians, Poles and Hungarians, since they could more easily be assimilated into British society&#8221;: you know, the <em>white<\/em> ones (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/politics\/margaret-thatcher\/6906503\/Margaret-Thatcher-complained-about-Asian-immigration-to-Britain.html\">in 1979<\/a>).\n<\/li>\n<li>On <strong>feminism and women rights<\/strong>: &#8220;I hate feminism. It is poison.&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spectator.co.uk\/features\/6766663\/failure-of-the-feminists\/\">to her advisor<\/a>), &#8220;The battle for women&#8217;s rights has largely been won. The days when they were demanded and discussed in strident tones should be gone forever. I hate those strident tones we hear from some Women&#8217;s Libbers.&#8221; (from a <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/uk_news\/politics\/4435414.stm\">1982 lecture<\/a>).\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All that without even getting into the disastrous economic legacy<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000002d50000000000000000_6461\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000002d50000000000000000_6461-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000002d50000000000000000_6461-1\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\">As a bonus: the emergence of financial institutions with no checks or responsibilities, let free to run the world&#8217;s economy into the ground 20 years later.<\/span>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thatcherism#Thatcher.27s_legacy\">annihilation of the British working class<\/a> and the crushing of anything resembling solidarity or compassion (you can <em>see<\/em> the wince on her face at the mention of such horrible marxist concepts) in most aspects of British social policies.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I&#8217;ve never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure. <\/p>\n<footer>Clarence Darrow<\/footer>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>And so it has come to pass, yet another towering political figure of the not-so-distant past is gone, her questionable legacy shielded from scrutiny by the buffer of a couple decades spent decaying into pitiful senility.
