{"id":1423,"date":"2006-08-06T21:39:12","date_gmt":"2006-08-06T19:39:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unknowngenius.com\/blog\/?p=1423"},"modified":"2006-08-08T04:10:44","modified_gmt":"2006-08-08T02:10:44","slug":"cultural-interlude","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unknowngenius.com\/blog\/archives\/2006\/08\/06\/cultural-interlude\/","title":{"rendered":"Cultural Interlude"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today was the 6th of August, <a href=\"http:\/\/notesfromthenog.blogspot.com\/2006\/08\/part-i-hiroshima.html\">a special day for the Japanese people<\/a> (I <a href=\"https:\/\/unknowngenius.com\/blog\/archives\/2005\/08\/06\/anniversary\/\">blogged about it<\/a> a year ago).<\/p>\n<p>Threading on this very tenuous connection, here are a few links of interest to japan-curious readers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Japan Pop socio-czar and unconsolable mourner of yesterdays,  <a href=\"http:\/\/neomarxisme.com\/\">Marxy<\/a> offers an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pliink.com\/mt\/marxy\/archives\/000950.html\">insightful dissection<\/a> of  Fujiwara Masahiko&#8217;s <i>Dignity of a Nation<\/i>: &#8216;a book that openly calls for the end of democracy and the return of &#8220;warrior ethics.&#8221;&#8216; (yea, that&#8217;s what the Japanese write about when they are not busy building flying cars or giant cat-eared robots).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/tokyoblog.livejournal.com\/\">Moresukine<\/a> is a small webcomic documenting its author&#8217;s life in Tokyo from January to June of 2006 through a series of &#8220;assignments&#8221; submitted by his readers. It&#8217;s pretty entertaining and only ever so slightly orientalist. I found it via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hellodamage.com\/cali\/2006\/04\/14\/2006-ape\/\">this guy<\/a>, who used to maintain a most delightfully fucked-up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hellodamage.com\/tdr\/\">repository  of all things pleonastically weird and Japanese<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Of course, the Links section above, holds even more Japanese goodness for you to peruse (both colourful words and insightful photographs).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In case you are wondering (you probably aren&#8217;t) about this sudden surge in Japan-related material: it&#8217;s not [just] me getting all mushy on a Sunday evening and missing people and places 10,000 miles away&#8230; <\/p>\n<p>You see, August is also the month where one has to send in their <a href=\"https:\/\/unknowngenius.com\/blog\/archives\/2005\/08\/31\/\u65e5\u672c\u8a9e\u80fd\u529b\u8a66\u9a13\u306e\u7533\u3057\u8fbc\u307f\/\">application<\/a> to take the JLPT in December. Being a glutton for punishment, and despite standing absolutely <em>no chance whatsoever<\/em>, I have decided to go for Level 2 this year. Well, I think I have.
