It may sound stupid, but I'd argue that competence is less important for the President than say, the ability to strike a compromise or to take sides when needed.

Sarkozy's entourage, it seems, is mainly composed of yes-men who will acquiesce to anything he says, and bend over when asked to (not saying that Sarkozy is more competent than Royal).

My point is, if NS screws up something, he will probably screw it up badly and won't encounter a lot of restistance. On the other hand, SR's supposed incompetence could lead her side-kicks to put up a fight should she do something really stupid.

It would be kinda sad if the only way for a French woman politician to achieve presidency was to look and behave like Margaret Thatcher :)

Well, she's not that incompetent. She has found a marvellous way to avoid saying bullshint, avoid annoying questions, avoid everything that should let her in trouble : being more populistic than a unified mutant of Nicolas Sarkozy, Olivier Besancenot, Jean-Marie Le Pen and Arlette "red is not dead" Laguiller. She'll just answer "I don't talk about meaningless things, this is neither poverty nor unemployment, that's not what French people want to hear about". Absolutely fabulous (darling).
