I agree with you about the Champs-Elysées not being particularly romantic compared to a few other parts of Paris. But here are some reasons I go to the Champs-Élysées.

--American movies are in English, even the cartoons (you don't have kids)
--The Maison d'Alsace restaurant is open 24 hours a day
--The Virgin Megastore is open till midnight for books, DVDs and CDs
--The Monoprix grocery store is open till midnight
--Séphora, Flora Danica and Ladurée, and I really hope Apple comes
--It's fun to sit in a cafe (I usually go to Le Deauville on the south side of the avenue) with a glass of rosé and watch the whole world go by

Don't go there on New Year's Eve, or right after a World Cup Match unless your face is painted bleu-blanc-rouge, but the rest of the time it is still the most beautiful avenue in the world.

Édouard,

Bah, most of the time, the countryside reeks just as much, in a different way... ;)
Paris is fine, really, as long as you keep your distance from the odorific Brumel-wannabes that walk its streets.
I haven't heard of an upcoming Apple Store opening in Paris, but considering their other locations, the Champs makes perfect sense.

I think everyone's grandma wore Chanel 5. But Guerlain is probably a strong contender too.

Oh, my dear, les grandes villes are not for the delicate of nose ! And as for the Champs-Élysées, am I right in hearing gossip about Apple looking for a site along the Elysian Fields to put its French flagship store in/on?

I used to love Paco Rabanne, and a mix of Équipage and cigarette smoke always reminds me of my first Paris gay bars along the rue Ste-Anne.

And didn't everyone's grandmother wear Shalimar? ; )
