Bonjour,

You want it? You come and get it.

Daryl: true. Hurricane there has been... actually, I think I even happened to be visiting that time (don't remember the year, though, might be 99...) and indeed I must say it was quite the storm. One of my strongest memory of that was the strange yellowish color of the sky an hour or so before and the surreal silence in the whole city (even though nothing seemed to indicate a something bigger than your average summer thunderstorm)...

It was something really different from all the hurricanes I have seen in the Indian Ocean or even our perennial Japanese typhoons...

I didn't know about these interesting consequences on the boat population of the Seine river, and I can imagine how nice it could have been to get rid of all the tourist boats...

But nonetheless I do not remember hearing of the Parc du Luxembourg being turned into a giant water polo field, nor of speedboats racing up the Champs Elysées... this was, after all, a (somewhat) controlled flood.

I know I am asking for a lot, but I also know this has happened in the past. Actually, there is that 1900-something flood mark, 4 or 5 feet high on a wall, a few blocks from my studio, rue de Seine, near the Pont des Arts...

As for my comment regarding Paris being boring, I hope you noticed the "On that count" (earthquakes, volcanoes and floods) I prefixed it with. I also hope you realize that my tongue was firmly planted in some other body part when I said that...

Of course there is tons to do in Paris, if anything cheap Belgian beer and countless watering holes can fill up my week program without difficulties.

Regarding my activities, they are mostly of the vacation kind at the moment: I only came back here from my European expeditions on tuesday, and I am leaving next thursday, with a week-end in Spain in the middle. That leaves me with a few days to catch up with friends, see a few art exhibits, stock up on European culture and speak as much as I humanly can, while I still am in a place where I have more than the language level of a 5 year old...

Working too, as this seems to be the only [legal] way I could find to keep money coming to my bank account so far, and they have broadband even here (!) which is quite convenient... :)

Dave !

Oh my god, you are sooo mistaken ! I was living on a boat in the Seine when it broke its banks at the end of 1999 after a enormous hurricane force storm hit Paris (it knocked one of the bells out of Notre Dame and flattened virtually all the trees in Versailles). It was terrifying and surreal, especially being on a boat in the Seine.

I woke up the nest morning to the water level having risen and my boat being about 10 metres from the shore. The quai was totally underwater (as well as my mailbox... :( ).

In fact, the water rose so fast that the boat was in danger of having the front of it trapped under the pont des concorde which joins place de concorde with the national assembly.

Anyhow, I was moved downstreama little by a police tug and tied up. The river was very high and fast and we had to wait almost a day tilla makeshift wooden bridge thing could be contructed to allow us to get to shore (just try calling your boss and telling him you can't come to work because you can't get to shore !).

The great thing was that the water level was so high the huge tourst boats, les bateaux mouche could not getunder the bridges so for the year 2000 the river was left to the inhabitants. My new boat neighbour and I had the most inbelievable party with too many friends and got to watch the millenium fireworks from probably the best vantage point in the city.

So, maybe you just need to hang around Paris a while longer. Trust me, there is always something interesting going on there... :)

What *are* you doing in Paris anyway ? I still haven't quite figured that out from your blog posts.
